Cervin vient de « mont Servin » qui, jusqu'en 1855, désignait le col de Saint-Théodule (Mons Silvanus, en latin, où le terme mons indiquait les cols, et n'acquit la signification de « sommet » que par la suite), d'une grande forêt traversée par le chemin du col du côté du Valtournenche1. Le changement du 's' au 'c' fut causée par une simple faute commise par Horace-Bénédict de Saussure, l'un des premiers cartographes du royaume de Sardaigne2. Ce toponyme fut inventé pendant l'« Optimum » climatique de l'époque romaine, lorsque les cols alpins étaient ouverts pendant la plupart de l'année. Ce fait fut entre autres la cause de la conquête romaine de la vallée d'Aoste, de la fondation d'Augusta Prætoria Salassorum (aujourd'hui, Aoste), et de l'importance de cette région au cours des siècles, surtout pour les cols du Grand (en latin, Summus Pœninus, Alpes pennines) et Petit-Saint-Bernard (en latin, Alpis Graia, Alpes grées). Dans le Valtournenche, le Cervin est appelé dans le patois valtournain tout simplement la Grand’Becca, c'est-à-dire le « Grand pic ».Le toponyme en allemand, Matterhorn, dérive de Matt (« pré » en suisse allemand et en langue walser - cf. le titsch de Gressoney-Saint-Jean Wisso Matto, en allemand Weissmatten, en français « Prés blancs ») ; et de Horn, c'est-à-dire « corne », le nom de la plupart des sommets des Alpes valaisannes et des Alpes valdôtaines limitrophes, surtout entre la vallée du Lys et le val d'Ayas (traduits en français par « Tête »). Par conséquent, la vallée de Zermatt, en allemand « Mattertal » est la « vallée des prés », et Zermatt est « le pré » (zer étant l'article défini masculin en langue walser).

Clow We lucked out this late September morning at Oxbow Bend.....the lingering smoke from the forest fires was light and there was a nice bank of fog just above the Snake River in the distance. No clouds, but not any wind either - which allowed for a reflection shot of Mount Moran surrounded by all the magical autumn colors. I hope you can visit this iconic spot at some point in your photography journey. I go back and back and back .... and I never tire of the view.

Fuji Five Lakes (富士五湖 Fuji-goko) is the name of the area located at the northern base of Mount Fuji about 1000 meters above sea level around the lakes Kawaguchiko, Saiko, Yamanakako, Shojiko and Motosuko in the Yamanashi prefecture of Japan. It is one of the best places to view Mount Fuji from a close distance and a good base for climbing the mountain.
