Red Brown Bear by Marsel van Oosten

This intimate portrait of a brown bear (ursos arctos) was taken on our Wildlife Photography Bootcamp in Spain - with over 100 different species from the five continents, this is the perfect place to learn all the basics of wildlife photography. The animals live in semi-wild conditions in stunning scenery. Getting a good shot of a lynx in the wild is close to impossible (they're endangered), but on this workshop anyone can get shots like this. I sometimes force myself to shoot with my 600mm lens in situations where you would normally choose less focal length. The reason for this is that it forces you to work with very tight compositions and that you end up with material that you would otherwise probably never had. In this case were were photographing one of my favorite species, the brown bears. They live in an area that is so big, that the bears do really well here. Lots of cubs are born every year, so there's always activity to photograph. This shot was taken late afternoon. One of the larger bears was resting his head on a large rock, and I simply couldn't resist the pose. I also like how the fur of the bear has turned the same shade of red as the iron-rich soil. This wildlife park used to be a large iron mine, which explains this reddish color. I waited for the bear to look into my direction and took this shot.
